Economic Fitness and Complexity (EFC) is a recent economic discipline and methodology that applies modern data science techniques to develop economic models rooted in the science of complex systems. It is a bottom-up, data-driven approach that focuses on concrete economic challenges without ideological assumptions, drawing on global growth data and leveraging tools from network theory, algorithms, machine learning, and AI. EFC is distinguished by its scientific rigour, analytical precision, forecasting accuracy, and transparency. This talk will explore key methodological challenges, policy applications, and forecasting insights—including how EFC has been used to evaluate the European Recovery Plan, guide industrial strategies in developing economies, identify technological upgrading paths, and analyse the impact of AI on the job market.
